Furniture handles: types and how to choose them

img

Handles are the detail you touch dozens of times a day and the easiest way to change how furniture looks. They can be small knobs, long bars, edge profiles, or nothing visible at all. This guide covers the main handle types, what hole spacing means, how to choose size and finish, and what Mobilier.md stocks.

In short

  • Choose handles by type (knob, pull handle, long bar, rail, edge pull, recessed), size and finish.
  • When replacing handles, the key measurement is the hole spacing: the distance between the centres of the fixing holes.
  • For a handleless look, use edge pulls, the VELLO system, or push-to-open hinges and drawer slides.
  • Mobilier.md, in Chișinău, Moldova, stocks over 870 GTV handles in 25 finishes, from 30 to 4,100 mm long.

What hole spacing means

Hole spacing (centre-to-centre distance) is the distance between the centres of the two holes a handle is fixed with. The handle itself is usually longer than its hole spacing.

When replacing handles, measure between the centres of the old holes and choose handles with the same spacing, so you don't need new holes. Many manufacturers use spacings in 32 mm steps, such as 96, 128, 160, 192 or 256 mm. The exact value is in each product description; if it isn't, ask a consultant.

Choosing size and finish

  • Narrow drawers and small doors: knobs or short handles.
  • Wide drawers: one long handle or two short ones, so the drawer pulls out evenly.
  • Tall wardrobe doors: long vertical handles, easy to grip at different heights.
  • One room: keep one handle range and one finish, even if lengths differ.

GTV handles come in 25 finishes, including chrome, stainless steel, aluminium, matt black, antique brass, copper, gold, titanium, champagne and anthracite. Matt black and anthracite suit light fronts and modern kitchens; steel, aluminium and chrome are neutral; brass, gold and copper add warmth to dark or wood-décor fronts.

Handleless furniture

  1. Edge pulls: a slim profile on the edge of the front, barely visible from the front.
  2. VELLO system: profiles for furniture without a classic handle.
  3. Push-to-open: doors and drawers open with a press, using special hinges and slides.

Drilling holes for handles

If you order fronts cut at Mobilier.md, handle holes can be drilled together with other CNC machining. Give the hole spacing and handle position for each front in your order, together with chipboard and MDF cutting.
