Legs change how furniture looks as much as its fronts do. A chest of drawers on wooden legs looks lighter, a sofa on taller legs is easier to clean under, and a unit on castors moves without effort. This guide covers the main types of furniture legs, how to choose height and load, and what Mobilier.md stocks.
In short
- Choose legs by furniture type, height, load, material and finish.
- Work out the load per leg: the weight of the furniture and its contents divided by the number of legs, plus a margin.
- For furniture you move, choose castors, ideally with brakes.
- Mobilier.md, in Chișinău, Moldova, stocks 188 GTV and Global legs and castors in 9 colours, rated from 18 to 64 kg per leg.
Types of furniture legs
| Type | What it looks like | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Tapered wooden leg | Narrows towards the floor, straight or angled | Chests, bedside tables, sofas, Scandinavian-style furniture |
| Trapezoid or square leg | Geometric shape with straight edges | Modern furniture, low cabinets, TV units |
| Metal leg | Slim profile or triangle; black, chrome, aluminium, gold | Tables, coffee tables, industrial or minimalist furniture |
| Castors | Wheels on a base, some with brakes | Side tables, mobile units, under-desk drawers |
Choosing the height
- Sofas, armchairs, beds: short legs, usually 100–150 mm; taller legs leave room for cleaning.
- Chests, bedside tables, TV units: 100–250 mm, depending on how light you want the piece to look.
- Coffee tables: overall height usually 400–500 mm, close to sofa seat height.
- Dining and kitchen tables: overall height usually around 750 mm.
The catalogue includes, for example, legs 100, 135, 150 and 250 mm high; the exact height is in each product name.
How much weight a leg carries
Mobilier.md lists the maximum load per leg, from 18 to 64 kg. Estimate the weight of the furniture and its contents, divide by the number of legs and choose legs rated above the result, with a margin.
Example: a 40 kg chest holding 60 kg of items weighs 100 kg in total — 25 kg per leg on 4 legs, so choose legs rated at least 30–35 kg. If the load per leg is too high, add a centre leg.
Matching finishes are also available for furniture legs.
Fixing
Many wooden legs fix with a threaded bolt (for example M8) into an insert or a mounting plate under the furniture; legs with their own plate screw straight into the base. The base must be thick enough to hold the screws. If you order boards cut at Mobilier.md, fixing holes can be drilled with CNC machining.
